I bought Does God Play Dice?: The New Mathematics of Chaos by Ian Stewart. I enjoyed reading some of his previous work that I got as a gift.
I have taken a course on chaos and fractals; I left with the impression that chaos is just “sensitive dependence on initial conditions, big deal”. Now that I am reading this book I am beginning to think that the consequence are bigger than I thought. The “big deal” is that almost all initial conditions are random because almost all (classical) real numbers are random. This means the evolution of a chaotic system is random, even if the system evolves according to simple rules.
